In this activity, students will learn how the science of paleontology reveals dinosaur fossils and 3D print a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull!

Learning Goals

By the end of the course students will:

  • Gain knowledge about how paleontologists uncover dinosaur fossils that tell a story
  • Demonstrate knowledge about how fossils are formed and the process of excavation using written and oral skills
  • Collaborate with classmates to 3D print a T-Rex skull
  • Apply geometric principles to dimension and measure irregular shapes or difficult lines


Materials

  • blank paper
  • pens/pencils
  • 3D Printer filament for printing (and scheduled time on the printer)
  • 3D printer such as the Cubicon Single+
  • slicing software such as Cubicreator or Simplify3D
  • licensed CAD software such as Fusion 360, Inventor, TinkerCAD or SolidWorks
  • computer and mouse for each student


Prerequisite Skills

  • Familiarity with TinkerCAD or other 3D printing software
