Learn about the use of hieroglyphics to communicate in ancient Egypt and create your own personalized cartouche!

Overview

In this activity, students will learn about the ancient Egyptian writings called hieroglyphics and then design their own personalized cartouche (name plate).


Duration: 1 to 2 40-minute sessions

Learning Goals

By the end of the course students will:

  • Investigate life in ancient Egypt, including the use of written communication through symbols called hieroglyphs
  • Translate an abstract design into a printed object that is personalized
  • Apply geometric principles to dimension and measure irregular shapes or difficult lines
  • Consider how different cultures and social groups employ different methods of communication and historical documentation (e.g., oral history vs. written etc.)


Materials

  • blank paper
  • pens/pencils
  • 3D Printer filament for printing (and scheduled time on the printer)
  • 3D printer such as the Cubicon Single+
  • slicing software such as Cubicreator or Simplify3D
  • licensed CAD software such as Fusion 360, Inventor, TinkerCAD or SolidWorks
  • computer and mouse for each student


Prerequisite Skills

  • Familiarity with TinkerCAD or other 3D printing software
