In this activity, students will learn about the use of Braille to communicate and print their own name in braille using 3D printing!


Duration: Up to (3) 40-minute sessions

Difficulty Level: Advanced

Group or Individual: Pairs


Learning Goals

By the end of the course students will:

  • Learn about Braille as a form of communication
  • Discuss assistive devices and technologies used by people with visual challenges
  • Translate an abstract design into a printed object that is personalized
  • Apply geometric principles to dimension and measure irregular shapes or difficult lines
  • Connect Braille with information on the human visual system, as it pertains to perception


Materials

  • blank paper
  • pens/pencils
  • 3D Printer filament for printing (and scheduled time on the printer)
  • 3D printer such as the Cubicon Single+
  • slicing software such as Cubicreator or Simplify3D
  • licensed CAD software such as Fusion 360, Inventor, TinkerCAD or SolidWorks
  • computer and mouse for each student


Prerequisite Skills

  • Familiarity with TinkerCAD or other 3D printing software
